The patient should be prepared for any kind of emergency in asthma. Medical help should be seeked immediately if the patient :
- Is at a high risk for a life endangering asthma.
- Is experiencing a severe attack e.g. PEF (Peak Expiratory Flow) less than 50% of personal best).
- Does not improve within two to six hours after giving corticosteroid treatment.
- Does not respond promptly to the bronchodilator.
- Has trouble walking or talking.
- Lips or fingernails become gray or blue.
