Dietary fats/lipids are an important consideration for patients of arthritis. Rather than eliminating fats/lipids, one has to choose the correct type of fats/lipids. Broadly, there are 3 types of fats/lipids, which can be enlisted as follows-

  • Saturated fats
  • Unsaturated fats
    • Monounsaturated fats (MUFA)
    • Polyunsaturated fats (PUFA)
      • Omega-3 fatty acids
      • Omega-6 fatty acids

Try to avoid saturated fats present in full fat dairy products, meats and poultry products as they can lead to obesity (a potential risk factor for osteoarthritis and other diseases).

On the other hand, unsaturated fats such as MUFA and PUFA (especially omega-3 fatty acids) are quiet beneficial. Therefore, take vegetable oils, nuts and fatty fish in moderation.
