Osteoporosis – Introduction

Osteoporosis is a common disease of the bone characterised by decreased bone mass and bone strength. Bone loss is a normal phenomenon with increasing age but it proceeds at a faster rate in females especially after menopause. Loss of bone mass makes the bone porous, fragile and hence more vulnerable to fractures (especially at the spine, hip and wrist) due to relatively trivial injuries that would normally not cause much damage.
