• Biphosphonates: These agents also reduce bone resorption by inhibiting osteoclasts and decrease the incidence of vertebral and hip fractures. Common biphosphonates include Alendronate and Risedronate which are administered orally whereas Pamidronate and Zoledronate are injectable preparations. To ensure better absorption and reduce side-effects (esophagitis), oralĀ  biphosphonates should be taken on empty stomach with a full glass of plain water. Avoid taking anything or lying down for at least half an hour after taking the medicine. Biphosphonates are also useful in prevention of steroid induced osteoporosis.
