BONE & JOINT DISORDERS (ARTHRITIS)

ANKYLOSING SPONDYLITIS – INTRODUCTION

‘Ankylosing’ means fusion of two bones into one and ‘spondylitis’ means inflammation of the spine. It mainly affects young men who are otherwise healthy and usually involves the spine and sacro-iliac joint (hip joint). Chronic (long standing) inflammation in these areas causes pain and stiffness in and around the spine. In advanced stage the fusion of vertebra can result in total loss of mobility of the spine and later on poor posture and deformities.
