BREAST FEEDING – COMMON FEEDING PROBLEMS OF THE BABY

OVERFEEDING

Overfeeding may be in quantity or quality. It is uncommon in the newborn period and the babies can be depended upon not to take excessive quantities, as a rule. But, occasionally an over-enthusiastic mother may overfeed her baby. Overfeeding is suggested by:

  • indigestion
  • vomiting or regurgitation
  • sometimes an excessive gain in weight

Often the excessively fed baby ends up becoming an obese child and an obese adult. We may not probably mention that obesity is undesirable at any time in life.

Cause of overfeeding

  • Diets too high in fat or carbohydrates may cause distention and flatulence and result in rapid and excessive gain in weight.
  • Formulas too high in calories if given in first 2-3 weeks of life can result in loose motions.
