  • Smoking should be avoided as much as possible, because it is one of the major factors responsible for COPD.
  • Precautions are required in certain dangerous occupations (mining, stone crushing) by both the employer as well as the employees.
  • Genetic defect related COPD (emphysema : a1 – antitrypsin deficiency) can be prevented by genetic counseling. 
  • In patients who have developed COPD, triggers like exposure of dust, fumes, cold air should be avoided to prevent exacerbations of the diseases.
