PULMONARY REHABILITATION

  • Rehabilitation programme is a must for COPD patients, as it helps to improve their exercise tolerance and bring about a feeling of well being. It should be chalked out in consultation with your doctor.
  • The patient may learn controlled breathing exercises such as : pursed lip breathing (deep breaths with closed lips) and diaphragmatic breathing (abdominal breathing). It helps to improve his lung capacity.
  • Exercises such as treadmill walking, cycling, stair climbing, etc. can be used to increase the exercise tolerance in these patients.
  • The upper limbs (both arms) and chest should also be exercised regularly, so as to increase their strength.
