TYPES OF CHRONIC BRONCHITIS
The four main types of Chronic Bronchitis are :
- Simple Chronic Bronchitis : Patient has cough that produces mucus (sputum) which is thin and clear but their is no obstruction to the airflow.
- Chronic Muco-purulent Bronchitis : Patient has cough with mucus which is thick and discolored because of secondary infection.
- Chronic Asthmatic Bronchitis : This type of bronchitis is characterized by episodes of asthmatic symptoms i.e. shortness of breath and wheezing.
- Chronic Bronchitis with Obstruction : This involves significant airway obstruction in addition to a prolonged cough. The constant exposure of the airways to the irritants (smoke, dust) causes swelling of breathing tubes and increased mucus production causing narrowing of the breathing tubes. This narrowing limits the amount of oxygen that enters the air sacs (alveoli) causing shortness of breath.
