SURGICAL THERAPY

Surgeon can also help the patients who are likely to have life long constipation due to an underlying incurable cause (as in birth defects leading to poor nerve supply of bowel). Earlier, an opening of the large intestine (colostomy) was made on to the abdominal wall, to facilitate cleaning of stools by the patient.  Presently, only a small opening of appendix (a part of colon) is brought on to the abdominal wall.  Through this, bowel cleansing fluid can be rushed in the the large intestine (Maloney’s continent enema).  If gives advantage of completely clearing the bowel, without fear of undesirable escape of stools through poorly nerve controlled rectum, in the intervening intervals.  The procedure of bowel cleansing is also easier and the patient is not dependent on others for assisting in his enema therapy.
