Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) refers to permanent lung damage, usually caused by smoking, in which there is an obstruction to air flow during exhalation (i.e. breathing out) Chronic Obstructive Airway Disease is a disorder characterized by progressive obstruction to airflow with a history of inhalation of irritants (tobacco smoke, etc) or genetic defect.
