Diet rich in milk may reduce heart disease risk

A recent study has revealed that a diet high in milk may protect against stroke and other heart diseases. These results contradicted the earlier findings which claimed that high dairy product intake may increase the risk of heart diseases. The study also revoked previous claims that milk raises blood cholesterol level and also increases the risk of vascular disease.

The study researchers said that the present perception (i.e. milk is bad for heart) should be challenged and every effort should be made to restore it in a healthy diet. The study involved 665 men of South Wales (age 45 – 59 years) which were firstly evaluated in 1979 to 1983. After recording their weight and food intake for seven days, they were followed for 20 years, to assess the occurrence of cardiovascular events.

As the follow-up period of this study is quiet long, some significant dietary changes were observed. At the start of the study almost all the men reported drinking whole (full-fat) milk but later on all had switched to skimmed or toned milk.

The results revealed that men whose milk intake was at or above 187 ml per day were 48% less likely to suffer from a stroke and 12% less likely to have a heart attack or any other cardiac event as compared to men who drank lesser amounts of milk.
