Cycling is a good full body aerobic exercise that increases stamina and endurance. Since it is a non impact exercise the chances of injury to the joints are low and is ideal for overweight and obese individuals.Cardiac, diabetic and arthritic patients can opt for cycling (preferably stationary cycling) as a form of exercise after consulting a doctor.
The goal of a cycling programme is to achieve a heart rate of 60 – 80% of the maximum heart rate for a specific period of time. In case of stationary cycling, a person can check the heart rate while pedaling, while in case of road cycling the person should stop and check the heart rate.
A beginner should gradually introduce cycling without straining the muscles to avoid pain and injury.
