Allergy is an adverse reaction which is caused due to hypersensitivity of the immune system to a particular allergen (substance causing allergy) which is usually not harmful. The initial exposure to the allergen results in a mild immune response whereas subsequent exposures result in symptoms. The symptoms may differ depending on the allergen and the affected body part.
Allergic reactions may be caused due to environmental agents, food items, drugs, insect or animal bites, jewellery, cosmetics etc.
