A clinical study was done to establish the beneficial role of Glucosamine and Chondroitin in Arthritis. This study evaluated all the previously published randomized control trials on this and concluded that Glucosamine by itself or in combination with chondroitin reduced pain and damage to the knee joint.
However, the superiority of these supplements over other OTC (over-the-counter) or prescription anti-inflammatory drugs has not been proven yet. No difference in adverse effects was noted for the supplements when compared to placebo. Glucosamine seems to be a safe and effective supplement for Arthritis. Safety of glucosamine has not been proved in pregnant females, hence it should be avoided during pregnancy. Although studies have shown the efficacy of glucosamine in reducing joint pain and damage, always consult your doctor before starting the supplement.
