Types of hypertension

  • Essential hypertension In 95% of cases cause is unknown. Such patients are said to have essential or primary hypertension. In such people hypertension is discovered accidentally, by a chance of examination of their blood pressure.
  • Secondary hypertension In 5% of cases high blood pressure occurs as a result of a specific disease or abnormality leading to sodium retention or peripheral vasoconstriction (narrowing of peripheral blood vessels).
