Hypertension or High Blood Pressure is the condition when the Blood pressure is elevated to such a level that the person is at an increased risk of damage to various organs in the body.

The heart acts as a pump; beating and relaxing alternately; with every beat it pushes blood into the arteries. The pressure produced in the arteries when the heart pumps blood into them is known as the systolic blood pressure. When the heart is relaxing the pressure in the arteries is known as the diastolic blood pressure,

Blood pressure is not constant and varies with age, activity, posture, environmental changes. So, Normal Blood Pressure is taken as a range with systolic pressure between 120-139mm Hg and diastolic pressure between 80-89 mm Hg (it is not judged from a single reading but with a number of readings over a period of time).

If blood pressure is recorded consistently as 140/90 mm Hg or higher at different occasions in an adult, it is considered as hypertension
