Fats and Lipids Fats and lipids intake play an important role in the dietary management of hypertension.Rather than eliminating fats/lipids one have to choose the correct type of fats. Broadly there are 3 types of fats/lipids, which can be enlisted as follows-
- Saturated fats
- Monounsaturated fats (MUFA)
- Polyunsaturated fats (PUFA)
Saturated fat intake causes obesity, which is a potential risk factor for hypertension. Moreover, cardio- vascular diseases are an usual accompaniment of hypertension so try to avoid foods which are rich in saturated fats and cholesterol. Instead of these fats try to include foods rich in unsaturated fats such as low-fat dairy products, yoghurt, fish, sunflower and olive oil. It is advisable to take a vegeterian diet as it is rich in poly unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA’s) and low in saturated fats and cholesterol.
