Among all vaccines, DPT is most likely to give rise to a reaction. Most of the side effects attributable to this vaccine are due to the Pertussis component.

It is essential to be familiar  with common side effects that follow DPT vaccination. The shots may hurt a little and the child may cry for a while. Local application of ice reduces pain and swelling and is sometimes useful, apart from regular fever-reducing medications.

Common side effects include:

  • Pain/soreness/lump at injection site which may persist.
  • Decreased appetite, fever & irritability.
  • Excessive crying (for 3 hours or more) some times.
  • Episodes of high fever
  • Rarely, convulsions (either due to high fever or the vaccine per se) or severe allergic reaction.
