HIB VACCINE – INTRODUCTION
Hib vaccine protects your child from a bacteria – Haemophilus influenzae type b. This bacteria can cause severe infections in young children. It is one of the main cause of meningitis (brain fever) in young children. Meningitis is an infection of the membrane covering the brain and spinal cord that can lead to hearing defects, permanent brain damage and may even be fatal.
H. influenzae can cause several other illnesses like epiglottitis (a severe throat infection that can choke the child), a serious form ofpneumonia, arthritis, bone and ear infections.
HIB infections are serious but easily prevented by the vaccine.
It’s important that your child receive this vaccine as per schedule because HIB bacteria tends to strike children maximum between the age group of 2 months to 2 years.
