A diabetes patient without any associated diseases can continue normal salt intake, which is equivalent to 5gm/day (1 teaspoon flat) but a diabetes patient with associated high blood pressure must restrict the salt intake to <3gm/day. Diabetes patient with renal complication should further restrict their salt intake to <2gm/day.

To achieve a salt restriction of <3gm/day one should avoid foods like processed meat products (sausages, ham and bacon), salted snacks, ketchups, sauces, pickles, chutneys, aji-no-moto (mono sodium glutamate), processed cheese and salted butter
