Diabetes can be divided into 2 categories : Primary Diabetes and Secondary diabetes.
In this category diabetes occurs without any associated diseases. It can be divided into four types :
- Type1 Diabetes : An autoimmune (self allergy) disorder, in which there is inadequate insulin production.
- Type2 Diabetes : In this type there is sufficient production of insulin, but the body is unable to use it properly.
- Latent Autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA) : It is a variation of type 1 diabetes mellitus which manifests as type 2 diabetes and is therefore mis-diagnosed.
- Gestational Diabetes : A type of diabetes associated with pregnancy.
Secondary diabetes develops due to the presence of some other disease condition like chronic pancreatitis (caused due to alcoholism), hormonal abnormalities (Cushing Syndrome, Acromegaly), genetic disorders.
