Tridosha Theory – Pitta Dosha

Pitta word has been derived from a Sanskrit word that means  “to heat”. Pitta Dosha is the responsible factor behind digestion, heat production, vision, colour of blood, skin luster, metabolism and bio transformation taking place in the body. Pitta is considered to be the Fire in the body. Pitta is the energy stored in the chemical bonds of all the organic substances which form us like in the form of  hormones, enzymes, organic acids, and neurotransmitters. It is also responsible for intellect and creates enthusiasm and determination.

In nutshell, it includes all chemical and metabolic transformations in the body as well as processes which promote heat production.

Types of pitta dosha

Type Site Function
Ranjak Pitta Liver and spleen  (Sushrut) Stomach (Vagbhat). It helps in the formation of the blood.
Pachak Pitta Small intestine Digestion of food, its separation into essence and waste.
Alochak Pitta. Eyes. Vision.
Sadhak Pitta. Heart.  It is responsible for intelligence , self respect and self consciousness.
Bhrajak Pitta. Skin.  Responsible for complexion and body temperature.

Function of Pitta Dosha

The principle functions of balanced Pitta are:

  • Responsible for normal digestion.
  • Normal vision.
  • Complexion and glow.
  • Regulates body temperature.
  • Initiating thirst and hunger.
  • Responsible for courage, cheerfulness and intelligence.
  • Efficient assimilation of foods.

In nutshell, responsible for temperature, digestion, assimilation, metabolism, intelligence, perception, thirst and hunger. It can be correlated in the body with the transformation, enzymes and hormones control. It is responsible for all the chemical reactions taking place in the body and electrical impulses.
