Renal transplantation is process, which involves surgical implantation of a kidney from a living related or unrelated donor or a cadaver. As in any other surgical procedure, this process also exerts some physiological as well as mental stress on the patient. The nutritional therapy, which should be implemented after renal transplantation, has to take care of various factors such as

  • Adequate energy and proteins are required for the quick recovery and wound healing.
  • Chronic usage of anti rejection medications can give rise to certain side effects like increased weight, increased cholesterol levels, glucose intolerance and disturbed metabolism of certain vitamins and minerals.

So, proper nutritional guidelines have to be recommended to the patients to reduce the extent of these side effects.
