Blood typing

This test determines the ABO blood type. There are 4 blood types: A, B, AB and O. For a successful kidney transplant it is essential that the blood types of the recipient and donor should either be same or compatible. Depending on this:

  • A recipient with O blood type can receive a kidney only from a donor with O blood type. But the donor with O blood type can donate his kidney to recipients with any blood type (i.e. A, B, AB or O)
  • A recipient with A blood type can receive kidney from a donor with either A or O blood type. The donor with A blood type can donate the kidney to recipients with either A or AB blood type.
  • A recipient with B blood type can receive kidney from a donor with either B or O blood type. The donor with B blood type can donate the kidney to recipients with either B or AB blood type.
  • A recipient with AB blood type can receive kidney from a donor with any blood type (i.e. A, B, AB or O). But the donor with AB blood type can donate the kidney to recipients only with AB blood type.
