There has been an aware increase in the intake of vitamin supplements during pregnancy in the past few years. In fact, the link between such supplements and a healthy foetus has been proven beyond doubt. Women who regularly take multivitamins starting form three months before conception and continuing till the first trimester of pregnancy may reduce the risk of their babies developing a birth defect called an omphalocele. Omphalocele is a disorder in which the navel does not close correctly, which leads to protrusion of the intestines through the navel. Children born with an omphalocele often have other types of birth defects, like spina bifida also. Researches have shown that women who take folic acid supplements prior to conception, appreciably reduce the risk of their children developing neural tube defects (a group of birth defects, including spina bifida, that can result in serious neurological damage). So if you are planning to have a baby, a daily multivitamin before becoming pregnant may be a cost-effective way to prevent a birth defect.
