Olestra is made from a mixture of soybean oil, cottonseed oil and sugar .It has been chemically processed to make it travel through the body but not absorbed by it. It is a fat substitute used in snack foods. Since the olestra is not absorbed, it adds no calories. Moreover it has no nutritional value and can cause acute abdominal distress. It also blocks the absorption of vitaminscrucial to good health.

Olestra is found in certain brands of chips (see Foods that Contain Olestra below) that are marketed as “fat free” because the fat passes through the body without being absorbed. In fact, these chips are full of fat, but since it is not absorbed the products can be labeled “fat free.”
