PREMATURE EJACULATION – CAUSES

What causes early ejaculation ?

Many factors may contribute to premature ejaculation. These include:

  • Anxiety regarding performance: It has been found that early ejaculation is more common among educated population. Educated persons unnecessarily think about their sexual performance and tend to focus more on the ways of satisfying their partner, this makes them anxious and affect their performance adversely.
  • Unrealistic Expectations: Because of certain cultural and social misconceptions many people expect to perform and try to control ejaculation for long time and feel unsatisfied when they do not meet their own unrealistic expectations.
  • Age: Adolescent and young adults are sensitive to sexual stimulation and hence they tend to ejaculate early.
  • Novelty of sex partner: Usually men tend to perform longer with familiar sexual partner. With the new partner they tend to ejaculate early.
  • Frequency of coitus also affects the time required to achieve the orgasm. If a person is having sexual intercourse frequently, it is more likely that he will take more time to ejaculate as opposed to the person who enjoys sex less often.
  • Past sexual experiences: Early (even childhood) sexual experiences in the form of sexual abuse or hurried quick sexual habit (to avoid getting caught) also contribute to this problem.
  • Certain drugs (e.g. opioid withdrawal) may also affect the sexual performance.
  • Other factors that may affect the sexual performance and may lead to premature ejaculation include:
    • Interpersonal factors like marital discord (as a expression of hostility towards the partner).
    • Individual’s self esteem, his sexual experiences, his understanding towards sex, his sexual and non sexual relationship with the partner.
    • Availability of time and space.
    • Presence of stress, anxiety, depression.
    • Homosexual tendencies can affect heterosexual performances.
    • Prolonged abstinence from sex.
    • Presence of some physical disability.
