VAGINISMUS – INTRODUCTION
It is defined as spasm of muscles in the the wall of vagina whichprevents full penetration. It usually results from intense fear of penetration, so much so that the vaginal wall may go into spasm by a mere thought of intercourse. It can also occur during a gynecological examination. If it persists, then it can lead to frustration, depression and interpersonal difficulties.
What is the cause of vaginismus?
- Childhood genital trauma, healed genital injury, presence of genital infections often lead to pain during sexual intercourse. This is more common with women.
- But genital pain during sexual intercourse can also occur in the absence of any genital injury or infection. In such casesinterpersonal disturbances, tension and anxiety about sexual act are the main reasons.
- In some cases childhood sexual abuse and rape is associated with such pain.
