  • Stress causes adverse emotional reactions in the body. The physiological changes brought about are done by a group of nerve cells situated in the middle of the brain, collectively called Limbic System. The Limbic System is the window to human emotions. Their deranged activity results in anxiety (anger reaction) or depression (grief reaction). When these reactions are disproportionate to the cause or without any cause, then that state is called neurosis.
  • The Limbic system nerve cells can be brought back to normalcy with a group of drugs called Psychotropic agents (Psycho = mind and tropic = affinity for). Drugs of this class include diazepam, alprazolam, buspirione, tricyclics, sertraline, fluoxetine, etc.. These drugs are to be used only when the emotional disturbance crosses over to the stage of Neurosis. Not one of these drugs is safe for self medication, since they bring about profound changes in physiology in the short term and long term. Only a qualified and properly trained doctor is competent to use them safely and effectively.
