MYXEDEMA COMA –Management
Myxedema coma is a medical emergency and must be treated rapidly. Levothyroxine sodium 400 µg is given intravenously as a loading dose followed by 100 µg intravenously daily.
Other supplementary measures include
- Warming up the person with blankets in case of hypothermia (abnormally low body temperature)
- Intubation (insertion of a tube into the wind pipe to help in breathing) and assisted mechanical ventilation (equipments used to help the person to breathe in comatose state) in case of hypercapnia (a condition marked by an unusually high concentration of carbon dioxide in the blood as a result of poor ventilation)
