The symptoms may persist for weeks to months.

  • Early symptoms include malaise (a vague feeling of bodily discomfort), fever and upper respiratory symptoms lasting for 1 or 2 weeks.
  • Painful enlargement of thyroid gland. Pain may radiate to the angle of the jaw, ears, neck and gets worse by swallowing, coughing, and movement of the neck. Sometimes there may be no pain then it is called as silent thyroiditis
  • Hyperthyroidism (over functioning of the thyroid gland) may occur which in some cases may be followed by a phase of hypothyroidism (under functioning of thyroid)
