Some dietary guidelines for hypothyroidism can be enlisted as follows
- In Hypothyroidism, basal metabolic rate (BMR) is too low and it decreases the calorie requirement, so a low-calorie yet nutritionally adequate diet is recommended.
- Increase the intake of dietary fiber because constipation is a common problem in this situation. Whole grains, wheat bran, oats, pulses, beans, fruits and vegetables are rich sources of dietary fiber.
- Avoid food items like cabbage, brocolli, cauliflower, turnip, rapeseeds, peanuts, and soybeans as they contain goitrogens. Goitrogens are the natural plant substances (chemicals), which can block iodine intake from the blood by thyroid cells and can cause goitre (enlargement of thyriod gland).
- Avoid animal fat and prefer vegetable oils as they are rich in essential fatty acids.
- Restrict the intake of common salt and salted snacks.
In the cases of endemic goitre some form of iodine supplementation is necessary. Iodised salt or iodine enriched oil can be used for this purpose.
