Aam Vata is a disease of joints (Sandhi Vikar). Toxic byproducts of impaired digestion (Aam) and aggravated Vata are the causative factors of Aam Vata.


Aam Vata can be classified in two different ways:

Depending on the dominant dosha/s [Sharangdhar poorvakhand 7:41]

  • Vataj
  • Pittaj
  • Kaphaj
  • Sannipataj / Tridoshaj

Depending upon the severity of the symptoms

  • Acute stage
  • Chronic stage

Acute stage is characterized by:

  • Intense pain, swelling and burning sensation in the affected joint. The pain can be compared with the pain caused due to a scorpion sting.[Ma.Ni.25:8][Ma.Ni.25:7]
  • Loss of function of the affected joints
  • Loss of appetite
  • Distaste in mouth
  • Increased saliVataion
  • Increased thirst
  • Constipation
  • Gurgling sound in abdomen
  • Heaviness and stiffness in the whole body
  • Laziness
  • Increased urination
  • Unconsciousness

These symptoms may get aggravated during night time, cold weather, rainy season and periods of emotional stress.

Chronic stage is characterized by:

  • Mild symptoms
  • Joint deformities
