OPV (ORAL POLIO VACCINE) – SIDE EFFECTS
OPV is safe and effective.
- In extremely rare cases (1 in every 2.5 million doses of the vaccine) OPV itself can cause paralysis (Vaccine Associated Paralytic Polio or VAPP), either in the vaccinated child, or in a close contact. In a country like India where polio is still so prevalent, this risk is considered extremely low compared to the risk of the disease. If paralysis were to occur, it could happen from about a week to about a month after the vaccination.
- An allergic reaction may occur.
