Panchakarma Therapy – Rakta Mokshana (Blood Letting)

Sushrut has considered blood as fourth dosha besides Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Purpose of blood letting (Raktamokshana) is to remove vitiated blood from the body.

Contraindicated in :

  • Subjects suffering from swelling of the whole body
  • Patients who have emaciated due to prolonged illness
  • Those who are Anaemic
  • In subjects suffering from
    • Piles
    • Abdominal disorders
    • Wasting disease
    • Paralysis
    • Acute, severe diseases, fever, cough and difficulty in breathing
    • Unconsciousness
    • Convulsions
  • In pregnancy
  • In children
  • In elderly
  • In timid subjects
  • In subjects who are tired
  • In subjects who have consumed alcohol
  • Immediately after Panchakarma

Blood letting is done either with or without surgical instruments. 

Blood letting with surgical instruments is done by two ways :

  •  Incision           (Prachhanan)
  •  Venepuncture  (Siravedh)

Other methods without the use of metallic instruments are :

  • Application of  Leech (Jalauka)
  • Aspiration of blood with Shring (Horns)
  • Application of Alabu for cupping (An instrument prepared from dried bottlegourd)
  • Cupping glass application (Ghati Yantra)

Indications :

Skin disorders, Gout, alcoholism, jaundice and allergic diseases.
