Recent studies conducted have shown that some types of berries like cranberry, blackcurrant, and blueberry like bilberries contain some compounds, which help in preventing heart disease, and may even help fight cancer.
Researchers have found that these berries provide high levels of flavonoids called quercetin, which is an antioxidant. Antioxidants are compounds that reduce the effect of harmful ‘free radicals’ (substances having a tendency to damage the cells in the body). In an 8-week study it was seen that people taking 100 gm of berries daily showed an increase of 32-51% in the blood quercetin level as compared to people on normal diet and not taking berries.
Most of the studies conducted have suggested that quercetin; one of the most effective antioxidant can prevent heart diseases.
Berries at the same time are also a good source of fiber, vitamin C and polyphenols. It has been suggested that it is best to eat berries uncooked as the heating process can destroy the antioxidants.
