Walnuts beneficial for diabetics

According to a new research done by Australian nutritionists, walnuts may help in improving cholesterol levels in people with type 2 Diabetes.

In the study, the researchers enrolled 55 people with type 2 diabetes, and divided them in following three groups:

  • Low fat diet daily
  • Modified low fat diet daily (to include food items rich in polyunsaturated fats)
  • Modified low fat diet with 1 ounce (30 grams) walnuts daily

The dietary goals which have to be achieved are less than 10% of calories from saturated fat, 7 to 10% of calories from polyunsaturated fats and adequate intake of omega-3 fatty acids.

After the completion of therapy it has been observed that most of the people in walnut group attained the dietary goals. Not only this, only the walnut group met all the targets of consumption of omega-3 fatty acids. The study results also revealed that the inclusion of walnuts and oily fish is more beneficial as compared to taking greater amounts of fish alone.

The researchers finally concluded that walnut being a rich source of heart-healthy omega-3 polyunsaturated fat will provide diabetic patients with good/beneficial fats while avoiding excess fats as well as calories. They further recommend regular moderate intake of walnuts for achieving optimal fat intake.
